This presentation reviews the physiology of venous function in health and illness.

Objectives

Course Objectives
- Describe how veins function as an ideal blood reservoir system.
- Define mean circulatory filling pressure
- Define stressed and unstressed blood volumes
- Describe the factors that determine blood flow to the heart
- Describe the role of the splanchnic circulation in maintenance of cardiac output during exercise or hemorrhage
- Describe the effects of intravenous fluids, blood, inodilator drugs, and pressor agents on the relationships between venous return and cardiac output function curves.

It was a great lecture. There were several points where him pointing at sections would have been better. There were certain areas I wish he would have given the version he did but also explain it in a simpler way.

I had a hard time to follow the presentation of "Adverse effect of fluid." However, learning it makes this presentation very easy. If you can integrate this lecture into the fluid one, it will give you a clear idea about how to "properly" treat critically ill patients in a shock. Lots of graphics and analogy were so intuitive as to help understanding as well.

During the lecture, Dr. Hansen's audio in several instances indicated he was pointing out items on slides. None of these were seen in the on-line course.

Very informative about how the venous system maintains pressure and physiologic effects of various real life problems and treatments. This is an area that requires a lot of thought for me to follow all the graphs, but I definitely appreciated the graphs, explanations and applications to fluid therapy in daily practice.

Good traditional Guytonian explanation of the interaction between the venous circulation and the heart but failed to mention the significant and ongoing controversy regarding the very existence of venous return as something independent of cardiac output.
