Description

If students are asked: "What does it mean when someone asks you to pay attention?" they might say, "It means to concentrate," or "It means to look at the teacher." When asked how they might concentrate harder on the teacher, a typical response might be: "Just pay attention more." But attention is much more than just "paying attention."
Attention is a system of controls that can help students with such things as working consistently each day, focusing on the right details when reading, and thinking ahead about what to say. Every day, students are expected to use their attention skills to succeed with school work, control behavior, and relate well to others. Different students will show different strengths and weaknesses in this area. For example, some students might find it easy to concentrate on information that isn't very exciting, but have a hard time staying awake while sitting still.
Helping students understand the different controls of attention and ways to strengthen all aspects of attention can increase their success throughout life.

The guide made it really easy to keep reading, the information was super useful and helpful. For me, something that I struggle with since I talk too much would be pacing myself to facilitate comprehension. In order for my future students to have appropriate periods of time for comprehension, I have to slow down to their level. Or at least to a level that will be easier for them to understand yet still challenging. I already knew I wanted students to be able to elaborate on questions they felt passionate about or just a question they found easy that was going to help them with their self esteem.

This training seemed like it had potential to be really useful, but the way it was written made it hard to follow, and it was fairly redundant, repeating a lot of the same information in different sections. It was also a little bit complicated to navigate through, as I had to close the window after each section and re-open the "notes" page to locate the link for the following section. It was worth it for my 3 hrs of credit, but I can't really say that I enjoyed it!

The content was excellent, but poorly organized. The link in the slideshow is enough to get you to the site, but even one more sentence to alert the course student that they would need to basically conduct a scavenger hunt and search for relevant pages for the sections on the study guide would help. These pages are not linked to on the page that the course URL sends us to. This would allow US, as your students, to be able to plan effectively, to scaffold the time management, previewing, and organizing skills that the course touts. This course has fantastic information, but I would not be surprised if many teachers decline to finish this course based upon this poor presentation.

I like the outline and how it laid out how to make our students make more of their time. I know in Kinder we have to do brain breaks often to keep them attentive to the lessons. We also have to model and lay our specific outlines for them since everything is new to them.
