The thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped gland that is located above the Adams apple. The hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) effect every cell in the body. The physiology of the thyroid hormone process is complex. Many nutrients, such as selenium and iodine play a crucial role in thyroid health. If even one of the several nutrients are missing the thyroid gland cannot function. This results in many systems in the body unable to do their tasks, from cardiac health to respiratory health and metabolic regulation to name a few. Without understanding the delicate interactions and nutrients required for a healthy thyroid, it is impossible to understand thyroid diseases and conditions.
