Description: This course will provide a review of the ocular diseases and management of the conditions associated with hypertension.

Objectives

Urgent vs Emergent
1. The audience will be better able to determine an urgent referral to the primary care doctor from an emergent referral to emergency room based on an elevated blood pressure reading.
Importance of Fundus Evaluation
2. The audience will have a better understanding of the importance of fundus evaluation in patients with elevated blood pressure.
Hypertensive Urgency vs Emergency
3. The audience will gain an understanding of the difference between a hypertensive urgency and a hypertensive emergency.
Treatment of Macular Edema
4. The audience will gain an understanding of the updated treatment recommendations for macular edema associated with retinal vein occlusions.
Updated Recommendations for Artery Occlusions
5. The audience will gain a better understanding of the updated recommendations for artery occlusions and the risk of stroke associated with these conditions.

Heather McLeod OD

Dr. McLeod received her optometric degree from ICO and completed a residency in ocular disease and special testing at SUNY State College of Optometry in New York. Dr. McLeod is an attending optometrist in the Primary Care Service, Urgent Care Service, and Advance Care Service at the Illinois Eye Institute. In addition, she serves as the Coordinator for the Primary Care and Ocular Disease Residency program. Dr. McLeod is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and member of the American Optometric Association.
