Description

Chauntel Norris describes how the Alabama Prison Birth Project (APBP) works to advocate for pregnant, incarcerated women. Learn how APBP is currently working to create change in carceral settings and advocate for their clients through childbirth education, doulas and lactation professionals. The webinar explores the program components and encourages the learner to discover ways to effect change in each of our own communities.

Participants may earn 1.0 Lamaze Contact Hours and 1.20 CABRN Contact Hours for viewing the webinar and passing a quiz.

Objectives

Learner will be able to identify contributing factors to the growth of female incarceration.
Learner will be able to identify programming that will help offset the harms caused by experiencing pregnancy and birth while incarcerated.

Chauntel is a Certified Lactation Counselor and has trained with DONA and Lamaze International to work as a doula and childbirth educator. She is a native of Birmingham, AL and attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she completed undergraduate studies in African American Studies and Psychology. She serves as the Co-Director for the Alabama Prison Birth Project where she works to ensure that incarcerated mothers have access to doula care, childbirth education and are able to express their milk and get it to their babies.

Chauntel is the Co-Founder of Baobab Birth Collective and serves on the board for the Alabama Breastfeeding Committee. She is also a kindred partner of Black Mamas Matter Association and a Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE) community transformer. She also gets to be the mom to two amazing children. She is an advocate for breastfeeding in vulnerable communities, and strongly believes in the right of all women to be able to breastfeed their children.
