This webinar will explore briefly the risks of COVID-19 for pregnant people and recommendations regarding the vaccine, then focus on the effects of the pandemic on the Six Healthy Birth Practices.

Participants may earn 1.0 Lamaze Contact Hour and 1 hour of CNE (CABRN) for attending this webinar and completing the participant evaluation.

Objectives

Learner will be able to summarize current research about the vulnerability and severity of the COVID-19 virus on pregnant people.
Learners will be able to summarize current recommendations regarding the COVID-19 vaccine for pregnant and breastfeeding people.
Learners will be able to describe how the COVID-19 pandemic impacts each of the 6 Healthy Birth Practices.

Debby Amis is a long-time childbirth educator who has served in many leadership roles in Lamaze including President of the Lamaze Board and Education Council Chair. Debby is registered nurse, DONA-Certified Doula, LCCE, and FACCE. Debby currently serves on the Lamaze Certification Council. In recent years, Debby has presented several keynote addresses on current research for childbirth educators for Lamaze International, ICEA, and DONA. Debby is the co-author of popular childbirth resources, Prepared Childbirth – The Family Way and The Educator’s Guide. Debby lives in Houston, Texas close to her two grandsons with her husband Steve, who has also served on the Lamaze Board of Directors.

Maria J Brooks is a past president of Lamaze International and currently presides as chair of the Education Council. She has served birthing families in New York City and Philadelphia as a Lamaze certified childbirth educator, doula, and more recently as a labor and delivery nurse. Maria has cared for families in two large teaching hospitals as well as a freestanding birth center. More importantly, she is a mother of two precocious teenagers who are her motivators to advocate for safe and healthy birth for all people.

Meghan Bardwell is a nurse, certified lactation consultant, and community childbirth educator located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Meghan currently works as a childbirth educator at Woman’s Hospital, provides support at a birth center, and leads a breastfeeding support group for new parents. She is currently pursuing her masters to become a Certified Nurse Midwife.

Joy is a registered nurse who specializes in labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum nursing care, and a passionate educator of new and growing families. Joy first began working in perinatal care in 2010 as a doula and shortly after became a birth assistant to midwives at a freestanding birth center in Texas. Joy went on to become a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator in 2011, and was inducted into the Fellow of the American College of Childbirth Educators (FACCE) in 2017 for making significant contributions to childbirth education. Joy has served as the childbirth educator at AdventHealth Hendersonville since 2015 and currently serves as the Lamaze International representative for the Respectful Maternity Care Council of the White Ribbon Alliance, and as chair of Parent Education for Lamaze's Education Council. Joy values advocating for families by providing holistic, approachable, and trustworthy evidence-based education and nursing care and considers it a privilege to stand alongside families during such a significant time.
