Description

Module 6 of Kidney School provides information about the etiology, interventional measures, and cardiovascular risk associated with anemia in chronic kidney disease, and highlights the effects of low hemoglobin levels on patient quality of life.

The purpose of Kidney School Continuing Education courses is to educate renal professionals about the medical and psychosocial impacts of end stage renal disease, as well as patients’ experience of coping with this chronic condition.

Objectives

Define anemia and explain how it is caused by CKD
Introduction to anemia
• Red blood cell function, structure, and origin
• Anemia etiology related to CKD stage development
Identify common signs and symptoms of anemia in CKD
Signs, symptoms, and patient experiences related to:
• Fatigue
• Cold-tolerance
• Pallor
• Cardiovascular issues
• Headaches
• Erectile dysfunction
• Dysmenorrhea
Identify the most common cardiovascular complication of anemia in CKD
Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH)
• Description of LVH
• Why it can be caused by anemia
List four lab tests used to assess anemia in CKD
Lab tests, results, and interpretation
• Hb
• Hct
• T-sat
• Ferritin
Describe therapeutic interventions for the treatment and management of anemia in CKD
Therapeutic interventions
• ESA administration and FDA warning
• Iron supplement
