Description

Speaking with pet owners is something veterinary technicians do frequently; as such, it is one of the most common "procedures" that technicians perform in veterinary medicine. Yet very few receive any guidance in this critical area during school or after. Being a good communicator is NOT just a personality trait; there are very specific communication tools that can be used by everyone. These core skills are particularly helpful in dealing with challenging clients or even co-workers. This two part talk will highlight the core skills, or tips, and emphasize ways in which to apply them. Attendees will also have the opportunity to share clinical situations of concern to foster discussion of how communication skills can be applied specifically in those instances.

Objectives

Learning Objectives:
• Be able to describe the 4 core communication skills
• Be able to give an example of a reflective statement
• Be able to demonstrate an empathy statement that could be made to a co-worker

Dr. Laura Garrett - Dr. Laura Garrett is a Clinical Associate Professor in oncology and Chief of Staff of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. She attained her DVM degree from U of Illinois in 1991, completed an internship at U of Minnesota, spent 2 years in private and referral practices, and then completed an oncology residency at UW Madison. After working in a New Zealand specialty clinic, she was on faculty for 7 years at Kansas State University prior to returning to her alma mater. Topics of publications include canine lymphoma, clinical trials, and communication; these mirror her main interests of therapeutic trials and teaching communication skills in the veterinary curriculum. She has four times received the student-nominated Mell Faculty Award for compassion and honoring the bond between owners and pets.
