Description

The seminar will give a brief overview of the human animal bond from a social work perspective, and continue with a strong focus on the grief process and how these emotions affect a client who has a sick, dying or deceased pet. We will conclude the seminar with an interactive session that will educate clinicians and nurses in ways to appropriately handle different grief scenarios in a veterinary setting. One should gain an improved understanding of the human-animal bond, along with additional insight to manage compassion fatigue in this unique profession.

Objectives

Learning Objectives:

• By the end of this workshop, attendees should have a strong understanding of the human-animal bond and how compassion fatigue can affect veterinary medicine. With this knowledge, the attendees will be able to enhance their client relations and improve the overall happiness in their practice.

Jodi Levine - Jodi Levine Timna is the acting Director of Social Work at the Animal Cancer Care clinic in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where she has held that title since 2009. Her path began in her childhood where she learned her love for animals and her job in helping those around her. These interests merged into a career after she received her Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and then became the Director of Social Work at the school's Ryan Veterinary Hospital. She now focuses her efforts helping clinicians and pet owners understand how to cope with their feelings, improve communication, and deal with the the difficult emotions brought on by cancer. With over fifteen years of experience, her expertise lies into he human-animal band and the bereavement process associated with pet loss and terminal illness. She has been regarded as an expert in the field and has lectured on the subject as far away as Japan and South Africa
