Description

As the leading type of anaemia worldwide, iron deficiency anaemia is estimated to affect over one billion people. There are various underlying causes, the major ones being inadequate intake and blood loss. These may be physiological or pathophysiological. While treatment approaches are inevitably an important consideration, the definitive aetiology of any iron deficiency must be established. This commonly involves ruling out gastrointestinal pathology. Management strategies may be linear and may not require consultation with haematology. However, in cases where iron deficiency is refractory to treatment a multidisciplinary approach may be indicated.
