Description

This session will cover what to think about before referring to other clinical teams and how to make effective referrals.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
● Identify and discuss factors involved in making the decision to refer a patient
● Identify and describe important issues in the referral process such as mode of referral, destination and timing
● Gather appropriate information and identify the most important points to include in your referral
● Write a succinct and effective referral letter
● Make a concise verbal referral
● Analyse and discuss post-referral communication between clinical teams and the importance of timely discharge summaries

Cressida Amiel and Bronwen Williams
on behalf of Health Education England

Cressida trained at Edinburgh University where she completed a medical degree and also a BSc in Physiology. She then moved to London to complete her Foundation training, and remained in North London for her GP vocational training scheme. She now works in Pimlico as an academic ST4, which involves clinical GP sessions, medical student teaching and primary care research.

Bronwen Williams - Bronwen trained in Medicine at Bristol University and completed her Foundation training years in the hospitals in the Bristol area. She then trained in General Practice in West London, and continues to work in this area as an academic ST4, which involves clinical GP sessions, medical student teaching and primary care research.
