Description

This session offers an insight into the bio-psychosocial aspects of substance misuse, including some of the legal issues associated with the use and misuse of substances.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
● Describe the presentation of intoxication, withdrawal and dependence
● Explain the demographics, impact and risks related to substance misuse
● Describe the legal framework and management strategies related to substance misuse
● Describe the causes and proposed hypotheses of drug misuse
● Explain the classification of drugs in the UK as well as the classifications of mental and behavioural disorders associated with them

Anil Kodagalli and Arasu Kuppuswamy
on behalf of Health Education England

Dr Anil Kodagalli MBBS, MRCPsych is a specialist registrar in adult mental health services within the Wessex deanery. He is currently working as a Specialist Trainee Registrar Level 5 for Dorset Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Arasu Kuppuswamy is a final year specialist trainee in psychiatry with the Wessex training Scheme. He is a trainee in general adult psychiatry with a special interest in alcohol and substance misuse.
