Description

This session discusses some common investigations and clinical conundrums. It emphasises the importance of having access to the range of values for common tests and timely action on abnormal results. Interpreting investigations correctly and wisely will help contribute towards your doctor/patient relationship.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
● List the reasons for having good knowledge of the normal range of values for commonly requested investigations and for knowing the importance of values of results falling outside the normal range
● State why values of the same test arising from different laboratories may differ slightly
● Identify the importance of timely action on receiving an abnormal result and of alerting your seniors

John is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. He is seconded to Health Education East of England, where he is Associate Dean and directs the East Anglia Foundation School.
He provides strategic direction for medical Education and Training in East of England. He is an accomplished trainer in clinical medicine and published on various emergency medicine and medical education topics.
