Description

This session describes the British National Formulary (BNF) as a primary source of medicines information, highlighting key sections in the BNF and their application, and the formats of drug monographs. It also describes the limitations of the BNF as a source of medicines information and describes other sources of information available to junior medical staff, accessible through the pharmacy department.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
● Interpret drug dosing information in the BNF
● Identify how to use the BNF to access information about drug treatments including interactions
● State the difference between formulations of medicines using morphine as an example
● Identify sources of information about medicines, other than the BNF

Sarah Morse was a principal pharmacist at King’s College Hospital, London. She managed the Medicines Information Department there, and part of her role involved working within medication safety. She was been involved with the training of junior doctors at King’s for three years.
