Description

This session follows the case of a teenager presenting to hospital intoxicated. It develops with allegations of sexual assault. Concerns regarding risk of sexual exploitation emerge. Identification and management of the safeguarding issues are explored.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the roles of health care professionals who might be involved in the management of a child or young person who has been the victim of a suspected sexual assault. This includes general practitioners (GPs), A&E doctors and nurses, paediatricians, forensic doctors and nurses, Sexual Health service, medical and nursing staff and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists and nurses
• Judge a young person's capacity to understand and give consent to assessment and information sharing
• Identify situations that suggest a young person is at risk of sexual exploitation
• Identify short and long term outcomes of abuse and understand some of the factors that may influence these

Katherine Teasdale

Katherine Teasdale is a Consultant Paediatrician in Community Paediatrics and Child Protection at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield, UK. She graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1989 and trained in Paediatrics in hospitals around Yorkshire.

Her work includes assessment clinics for children where there are safeguarding concerns, including sexual abuse. She delivers training on child protection in both health and multi-agency settings, on a regular basis.
