Description

This session describes a case of unexpected infant death, with child protection concerns, highlighting the role of the paediatrician and examining the role of other healthcare professionals in a multi-agency environment. The session also introduces Serious Case Reviews. These sessions have been updated in 2015 by Dr Fiona Straw, Dr Leonie Pereira and Dr Rajiv Mittal wth quality assurance by Dr Andrea Goddard and Dr Anne Aukett.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the role of paediatricians and other healthcare professionals in the response to unexpected childhood deaths
• Identify possible signs and symptoms of maltreatment in an unexpected child death
• Interpret clinical findings in the light of other information available to the multi-agency team
• Contribute to learning from a Serious Case Review

Joanna Garstang is a Specialist Registrar in Community Paediatrics based at Warwick University. Her interests are in Child Protection, SUDI and Looked After Children.

She is currently evaluating the multi-agency response to unexpected childhood deaths as part of a PhD thesis.
