This session explores the triggers, pathogenesis, presentation, clinical diagnosis and natural history of anaphylaxis, as well as the use of laboratory confirmatory markers.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• State the causes of severe anaphylaxis
• Describe the multiple cells, mediators and pathways implicated in the chain reaction response to what begins primarily as either an immunological or non-immunological response to an allergen
• Describe the multi-system manifestations, variability in the presentation and respective frequency of presenting signs and symptoms
• Explain the typical time course, the potential for rapid escalation to impending catastrophe and the potential for biphasic and protracted reactions
• Describe the laboratory tests used to support the diagnosis and how to use them
• Describe the treatments for anaphylaxis

Sadly Imogen has passed away.

Imogen was an anaesthetic trainee in the Wessex Deanery. She was spending a year out of programme working as an intensive care registrar at the Liverpool Hospital, Sydney.

Louella Vaughan
Consultant Physician in Acute Medicine, St Thomas’ Hospital, London

Louella is a Consultant Physician in Acute Medicine at St Thomas’ Hospital, London and Honorary Consultant Physician at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London.

Her research interests include use of new technologies in the acute setting and use of improvement methodologies to improve the quality of healthcare.

As a trained historian, she also has an interest in medical thought and philosophy.

She is the Clinical Lead for the Hospital at Night e-learning project.
