This is a step-by-step description of a management plan for a breathless HIV+ (human immunodeficiency virus) patient.

Objectives

• Identify appropriate assessment of a breathless HIV+ patient
• Explain first line pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) therapy
• Recognise criteria for clinical deterioration of an HIV+ breathless patient on PCP therapy

Gary Whitlock is a Specialist Registrar in genito-urinary medicine at the Mortimer Market Centre in London. He trained as a doctor in Nottingham after completing a PhD in Biology from the University of Cambridge. He has worked in sexual health and HIV at various centres including St Bartholomew’s, the Royal London and North Middlesex Hospital.
