Description

This session explores the physiological consequences of ageing by discussing the ‘geriatric giants’ and how the elderly may present with one of these ‘giants’ during the acute take.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• State the consequences of physiological change due to ageing
• Explain the ways in which elderly patients with acute illness may present with one of the geriatric giants
• State the benefits of rehabilitation

Dr Alison Yarnall is a Registrar in Geriatrics in the Northern Region. Her publications include a review article on Diabetes and the older person, published in CME Geriatric Medicine, and she co-authored part of a Compendium for the British Geriatric Society on diabetes. She has an interest in medical education and teaches medical students on a regular basis.
