Description

This session presents a methodical approach to the evaluation and management of patients presenting with acute back pain; it includes supportive diagnostic imaging. As departments will have set trauma guidelines, the focus is mainly on non-traumatic back pain.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the common methods of diagnosis used in the case of acute back pain
• Explain the causes of, and how to examine for, cauda equina syndrome
• Describe the general management principles for benign acute back pain

Olwen Westerland and Dr David Howlett

Olwen Westerland is a radiology registrar at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust. She graduated from Imperial College of Medicine in 2007 (MBBS BSc) and commenced her radiology training in 2010. Olwen is interested in all areas of diagnostic radiology and also has a particular interest in educational projects such as the Acumen series.

David is a Consultant Radiologist at Eastbourne District General Hospital and Honorary Reader at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. His interests include symptomatic breast and head and neck imaging and biopsy techniques. He is a Royal College of Radiologists Fellowship examiner and a Fellow of both the Royal College of Radiologists and Physicians.
