Description

This session describes the causes and metabolic complications of chronic kidney disease.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• List the causes of chronic kidney disease in relation to the anatomical 'site of injury'
• Recognise the ECG features of hyperkalaemia and initiate emergency treatment
• Recognise key functions of the kidney, the pathophysiological consequences of kidney dysfunction and the basics of managing these complications

Dr Jones has been a Consultant Renal Physician in York since 1998, having completed his training in the Midlands and Yorkshire. He received an MD from the University of Birmingham, studying nutritional aspects of peritoneal dialysis.

He has been in the field of nephrology for 16 years. Areas of particular interest include nutrition, salt and water balance and hypertension control in CKD and ESRF. The use of audit and implementation of systems to improve outcomes are also areas of increasing interest. He believes that a strong multi-disciplinary team is essential to maximise treatment opportunities for patients with kidney disease.
