Description

This session reviews the diagnosis and treatment approaches for patients with chronic hyperventilation syndrome (HVS).

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Recognise the typical presentation of patients with hyperventilation
• List discriminating tests required to enable diagnosis
• Recognise important discriminating symptoms in the differential diagnosis and be aware of ‘red flag’ symptoms which suggest more serious pathology in the breathless patient
• Formulate a management plan

David Raeside and Carolyn Bell

David qualified in 1986 and trained in Glasgow, London and Nottingham prior to becoming a consultant in 1999. He has a special interest in chest medicine.

Carolyn has been a qualified physiotherapist for 24 years, working in Sunderland, Glasgow and Lanarkshire. She has specialised in respiratory medicine since 1992.
