Description

This session considers the causes of fever and discusses differentials of fever in adults. It also considers causes of pyrexia of unknown origin.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Explain the difference between fever and sepsis
• Recognise different causes of fever
• Construct a differential diagnosis for fever

Nainal Shah and Tom Edwards

Nainal is a consultant in acute medicine at Leicester Royal Infirmary. She trained in geriatrics and general medicine at Leicester. She completed an MD in 2008 (hemodynamic parameters in hypertensive patients following acute stroke and early outcome).

Nainal is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. She has a keen interest in teaching and training. She is a training programme director for foundation trainees. She has been an educational and a clinical supervisor for foundation year, core medical, general practice and specialist trainees. She also teaches undergraduate medical students at the University of Leicester. Nainal has developed an e-learning module on dementia care. Working in partnership with De Montfort University, she has developed a delirium risk assessment tool. Her interest in quality and clinical governance has led her to work on a variety of projects with presentation of findings at national and international meetings.

Her other interests include painting.

Dr Edwards graduated from the University of Leicester in 2012 and is currently [2013] completing foundation training.

He is a trained mentor for medical students in Leicester medical school and is junior doctor representative for Leicester, preparing for professional practice committee.
