This session considers the basic pathophysiology underlying paracetamol overdoses. It then discusses appropriate investigation and management of the clinical problem.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe what constitutes a paracetamol overdose
• List the investigations necessary to diagnose and assess the severity and complications of an overdose
• Explain the management strategies for paracetamol overdose and its complications
• Recall the NICE guidelines with reference to self-harm, short-term physical and psychological management and secondary prevention of paracetamol overdoses

Louise Ma is currently working in the North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, London. She is studying an MA in Technology and Simulation in Clinical Education at the Institute of Education to increase her understanding of medical education theories and their practical applications. Her professional interests include medical education and simulation. She is a simulation facilitator and works with local simulation centres to develop their postgraduate training programme. She is also building up College of Emergency Medicine Level 1 Ultrasound Skill Competencies.
