Description

This session provides an introduction to the key issues to consider with regard to children learning more than one language. It will provide you with current evidence-based guidance, relevant for practitioners advising parents of bilingual children.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

• Identify and disregard common myths
• Describe the challenges faced by bilingual children in the UK

Sean Pert Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist
on behalf of Health Education England

Dr Sean Pert works in the NHS with bilingual children and their families. Dr Pert has a special interest in language impairment and bilingualism.

Dr Pert has published on code-switching (using two languages in one spoken utterance) and the identification and treatment of language impairment in bilingual children. He regularly advises speech and language therapists on working with bilingual families.

Dr Carol Stow and Dr Sean Pert are joint recipients of the Sternberg Award for Clinical Innovation for their work with Pakistani heritage children.
