Description

This session explores the burden of health problems in adolescence, provides an overview of current key health indicators for young people, and outlines reasons to invest in improving adolescent health and services for young people.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Explain why investing in young people is beneficial
• Estimate the size of the adolescent population in the UK
• Identify the causes of major health burden in young people
• Discuss trends and causes in adolescent mortality and morbidity
• Discuss key health indicators in adolescence
• Indicate the levels at which adolescent health problems can be addressed

Russell Viner is Reader in Adolescent Medicine at the UCL Institute of Child Health, and Consultant in Adolescent Medicine & Endocrinology at UCL Hospitals and Great Ormond St Hospital London. He has extensive clinical and research interests in adolescent medicine, diabetes and obesity, and has worked as a consultant on adolescent health for the Department of Health and the World Health Organisation.
