Local anaesthetic agents are useful adjuncts to general anaesthesia. They can be used to provide local blockade of nerves supplying a surgical area, which can reduce the perioperative use of strong opioid drugs and so reduce the unwanted effects of these agents. They can also be used for regional anaesthesia, but this will be covered in other sessions.

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Discuss the use of local anaesthetic agents
• Discuss how local anaesthesia contributes to the postoperative pain management plan
• Describe factors that influence choice of local anaesthetic agent
• Compare the different properties of the two commonly used local anaesthetic agents, lidocaine and bupivacaine
• Explain how local anaesthetics work
