Description

This session introduces the types of intravenous fluids available for use during and after surgery. These fluids can be classified into colloids and crystalloids and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Blood and blood products are not covered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify the types of intravenous fluids available
• Describe the composition of commonly prescribed fluids
• Identify crystalloid and colloid fluids
• Discuss how these fluids distribute through the body compartments
• Prescribe postoperative fluids

Sue Hill studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, with her final year in Pharmacology. She then spent three years in the Pharmacology Department in Cambridge completing a PhD that looked into possible mechanisms of general anaesthetic action. During that time she became fascinated by anaesthesia and undertook her medical training in Cambridge.

Sue is currently a Consultant.
