Description

This session outlines the additional problems presented to the anaesthetist by two high risk groups of patients who present commonly for surgery. These patients are those at extremes of age and emergency surgery patients.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the basic physiological differences between infants and fit adults and the relevance to anaesthesia and surgery
• Explain the deterioration in organ systems associated with the ageing process and the implications for surgery and anaesthesia
• Identify the risks posed by the unprepared patient presenting for emergency surgery

Dr Richard J Telford BSc (Hons), MB BS, FRCA: qualified from The Medical College of St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He trained in anaesthesia in London, Liverpool and USA. Interests include: vascular anaesthesia, problematic airways, paediatric anaesthesia and improving outcomes from major surgery.
