Description

This session outlines the basic definitions of local and regional anaesthesia (LA and RA), and advises when to use each as a sole technique and when to use in combination with general anaesthesia (GA). It also covers consent issues, minimal safety standards for block performance and briefly outlines a few of the more common techniques.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• State how the addition of local and regional techniques to general anaesthesia can improve outcome
• Identify the patient safety issues associated with regional techniques, including life-threatening complications and nerve damage

Gavin Werrett
on behalf of Health Education England

Gavin qualified from Bristol University in 1995. His anaesthetic training has predominantly occurred within the South West region with two sabbatical periods in Fiji and New Zealand.

He is particularly interested in undergraduate teaching and the use of regional anaesthesia to improve patient outcome.
