Description

This session demonstrates the usefulness of volatile anaesthetic agents in clinical anaesthesia. It describes how end-tidal agent monitoring and minimum alveolar concentration contribute to patient safety and avoidance of awareness and the methods employed to prevent awareness during anaesthesia.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Explain why volatile agents are such useful anaesthetic agents
• Choose the correct volatile agents for use in specific situations
• Recognize the variants of minimum alveolar concentration and factors that increase or decrease the end-tidal volatile concentration requirements to maintain adequate anaesthesia
• Explain practical methods employed to avoid intraoperative awareness
