Description

This session describes the physiology and immunology of anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions, their features, and intraoperative management and follow-up of a patient suspected of having suffered an anaphylactic reaction.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Understand the cause and mechanism behind anaphylaxis
• Recognize anaphylaxis
• Apply the primary and secondary management of suspected anaphylaxis
• Undertake appropriate further investigation and follow-up of suspected anaphylactic reactions

Richard is a specialist registrar in anaesthesia at Plymouth. He qualified from Birmingham University in 1997. His anaesthetic training has occurred in the Midlands and the South West region with a sabbatical period in New Zealand.

He is particularly interested in acute pain management, thoracic and obstetric anaesthesia.
