Description

This session reviews the initial settings during mechanical ventilation and the management of abnormal blood gases.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Choose the correct initial settings when commencing a patient on positive pressure ventilation
• List the important causes of hypoxaemia and hypercapnia during positive pressure ventilation
• Describe the management of hypoxaemia during mechanical ventilation
• Describe the management of hypercapnia during mechanical ventilation

Andrew is Consultant Anaesthetist, Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. Peter MacNaughton is Clinical Director of Critical Care at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust where he has worked as a consultant in Intensive Care Medicine since 1995.

He qualified at Westminster Medical School, University of London and undertook post graduate training in London, Bristol and Sydney.

His research interests are in applied respiratory physiology and ventilatory support.
