Description

This session provides an overview of the complications of neuraxial techniques, particularly timing of occurrence, incidence, signs and symptoms, long term sequelae and treatments.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• List, with incidences where known, the complications of neuraxial techniques
• Recognize the equal importance to the patient of common but mild risk versus rare but devastating risk
• Describe strategies for reducing the risk of complications
• Describe the management of complications
• Recognize key indications for further assessment and/or invasive treatment of serious complications

Tim has clinical interests in obstetric and day case anaesthesia and active roles in education in his own hospital, regionally and nationally.

He played a key role in the introduction of lipid emulsion therapy for local anaesthetic toxicity, and was a member of the Association of Anaesthestists of Great Britain and Ireland working parties that wrote the original (2007) and revised (2010) guidelines for its treatment.

Tim is a content author for the e-LA project.
