Description

The diagnosis, confirmation, and certification of death are core skills for medical practitioners in the UK. Although the confirmation of death remains relatively straightforward in the majority of circumstances, developments in advanced resuscitation techniques together with the continuing recognition of the medical benefits of cadaveric organ donation present the clinician working in critical care with specific challenges. Although these can largely be overcome, to do so requires a thorough understanding of the pathophysiological events that surround death within the broader societal context of what are considered the essential distinctions between what is alive and what is
dead.
