Description

An overview of the causes, investigation and immediate management of the comatose patient.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Explain the causes of coma
• Explain how investigation and management should proceed simultaneously to prevent secondary injury
• Evaluate comatose patients through relevant history and investigation, and formulate a differential diagnosis
• Identify the indications for and basic interpretation of radiological investigations
• Define the following for lumbar puncture: Indications, contraindications, complications, the tests to request it and how to interpret the results

Adrian James Varley
Specialist registrar in anaesthesia and ICM, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge

James Varley MRCS FRCA EDIC is a specialist registrar in anaesthesia and ICM. He qualified from the Royal Free and has trained in anaesthesia and ICM in Anglia and Melbourne. His interests include thoracic anaesthesia and the use of echocardiography in ICU. He wrote and redrafted this session.

Anthony Absalom
Consultant Anaesthetist, professor of anaesthesia, University Medical Centre Groningen in the Netherlands

Anthony Absalom MBChB FRCA MD qualified from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and trained in anaesthesia in East Anglia and Scotland. His research interests include measurement of anaesthetic depth, pharmacology, and mechanisms of anaesthetic action.
