Description

This session will discuss the pathophysiology, clinical features and management of both hyponatraemia and hypernatraemia in critically ill patients.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• State the normal range for serum sodium in mmol/L
• Estimate plasma osmolality from simple blood tests
• Classify causes of hyponatraemia
• List common causes of the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion
• Classify causes of hypernatraemia
• Select appropriate tests for investigating patients with hyponatraemia and hypernatraemia

Dr. Hayes-Bradley is currently (2010) completing her SpR training in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care medicine.

Clare is an active member of the Territorial Army, and regular volunteer within her local pre-hospital care scheme.

Her interests are education within medicine, pre-hospital critical care, retrieval medicine and trauma anaesthesia.
