Description

This session outlines the basic management of the causes and sequelae of liver dysfunction in patients with multi-organ failure or sepsis, in particular those patients with previously functionally and histologically normal livers.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Recall the basic physiological functions of the liver
• Describe the pathological processes behind liver dysfunction in multi-organ failure or sepsis
• Recognize the clinical spectrum of liver dysfunction in sepsis and multi-organ failure
• Explain the investigation of liver dysfunction in critically ill patients
• Describe the treatment of liver dysfunction in critically ill patients
