Description

Upper gastro-intestinal bleeding is a common and sometimes life threatening problem. This session discusses the symptoms, causes, resuscitation, scoring and further management of these patients.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify patients presenting with acute upper GI bleeding and describe causes of acute upper GI bleeding
• Discuss initial resuscitation and management
• Identify patients at high risk of re-bleeding and death
• Be aware of further specialist management
• Discuss causes and investigations of patients with chronic upper GI bleeding

Ms Amandine Woodham qualified as a Doctor from the Royal Free and University College Medical School in 2008 after completing her pre-clinical training at St John’s College, Cambridge. She did her Core Surgical Training in the East of England Deanery during which time she was a clinical supervisor for medical students. Currently she is a training surgical registrar in the South East London Deanery. Memberships: Royal College of Surgeons of England, ASiT




Cynthia-M Borg
Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon, University Hospital Lewisham, Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, London
Ms Borg qualified as a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Malta in 1997. She completed a research degree (MD University of London) at King’s College Hospital and at the Department of Metabolic Medicine at the Hammersmith Hospital in London about changes in gut hormones after bariatric surgery. She did her specialist training in upper GI surgery in London and the North-East Thames followed by a bariatric surgery fellowship at UCLH.
She was appointed as a consultant surgeon at UHL in 2012 and leads the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery service. She is very active in the International Bariatric Club and currently is the Associate Editor for Journal of the IBC.
Specialist clinical interests; bariatric and metabolic surgery, gastro-oesophageal reflux.
Memberships: Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, ASGBI, AUGIS, BOMSS, IFSO, ASMBS, IBC.
