This session describes the principles of care in the immediate postoperative period after lung transplant, including immunosuppression treatment and management of early complications.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the general priorities for patient management in ICU post lung transplant
• List the principles of immunosuppression for lung transplant
• Describe the diagnosis and treatment of early complications
• Describe the early postoperative surgical complications
• Describe infections that may occur in the patient with lung transplant

Marc Giménez-Milà
Consultant in Intensive Care, Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Marc provides anaesthesia care for cardiothoracic procedures including heart and lung transplantation and also forms part of the Papworth Venovenous ECMO service.

He undertook his postgraduate training in anaesthesiology in the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona (Spain) and his senior clinical fellowship in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge (UK).

He has published in peer-reviewed journals and is a member of the editorial board of the Mathews Journal of Anesthesia, the ARC Journal of Anesthesiology and Current Updates in Anesthetics and Anesthesiology. He was awarded the 2016 Fernando Vidal award from the Catalan Society of Pain (Barcelona, Spain).

His research interests are chronic pain after cardiac surgery, enhanced recovery after thoracic surgery, patient safety and quality improvement.

Jasvir Parmar
Consultant Respiratory Transplant Physician, Papworth Hospital, Cambridge

Jas’ undergraduate training at Southampton University was followed by respiratory and general medicine on the Wessex Specialist Registrar rotation. He completed a PhD in the Department of Medicine at Addenbrookes Hospital and St Catharine’s College Cambridge. His thesis examined the impact of changes in conformations of alpha1-antitrypsin on the biology of neutrophil function in relation to pulmonary inflammation.

This period of academic training was followed by a year, post certificate of completion of specialist Fellowship training, on the Lung Transplant and Cystic Fibrosis Program at the University of Toronto.

Jas is also an Associate Lecturer and Senior Clinical Tutor at the University of Cambridge.

His main areas of interest are lung transplantation, interventional bronchoscopy and ECMO.
