This session is devoted to the epidemiology, causes, diagnosis, management and prognosis of ARDS. The pulmonary pathophysiology outlined is used as a rationale for proposed management strategies and their limitations. Detailed answers to questions posed in the session provide important additional learning material.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify patients with ARDS
• State some risk factors for and epidemiology of ARDS
• Give a fundamental overview of ARDS pathophysiology
• Explain the role for computerized tomography (CT) scanning in patients with ARDS

Julius Cranshaw

Jules Cranshaw qualified from Bristol University in 1992 and subsequently undertook specialist training in general medicine, anaesthesia and critical care. He spent three years at the National Heart and Lung Institute studying the pathophysiology of ARDS. He was appointed as a consultant at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital in 2005, joining their critical care team.
