This session will cover the clinical features, natural history, diagnostics and treatment of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• List the risk factors for CMV acquisition and clinical disease
• Identify the clinical features associated with CMV viraemia and end-organ disease (including retinitis, encephalitis and enteritis)
• List the general and specific diagnostics available for CMV infection
• Describe the specific therapies available for CMV and their main side-effects and contraindications

Ed Wilkins and Tom Wingfield

Dr Ed Wilkins is Consultant and Clinical Director of Infectious Diseases at North Manchester General Hospital. He trained in infectious diseases in London and Liverpool, tropical medicine in Africa and medical microbiology with the Public Health Laboratory Service. Dr Wilkins has been involved with HIV patient care and research since 1986 with interests in antiretroviral toxicity, hepatitis co-infection and the investigation of treatment strategies. Dr Wilkins chairs the BHIVA Conferences Subcommittee and sits on the Audit and Standards Subcommittee.

Dr Tom Wingfield is a Specialist Registrar in Infectious Diseases and General Medicine at North Manchester General Hospital. He trained in Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester, completing the DTMH, DFSRH and DRCOG. He has also worked as a doctor in Malawi, Botswana, Peru and at Glastonbury festival.
