Description

This session describes the natural history and presentation of patients with either acute or chronic hepatitis B virus infection, and the investigations required.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the epidemiology of acute and chronic hepatitis B
• Appreciate the natural history of hepatitis B and the factors that determine it
• Recognise the common symptoms and signs associated with both acute and chronic hepatitis B
• Select and interpret the appropriate investigations to diagnose acute and chronic hepatitis B
• Select the investigations you would need to make an initial assessment of a patient with acute or chronic hepatitis B
• Appropriately advise contacts of a patient with hepatitis B regarding the need for screening and immunisation

Richard Gilson

Senior Clinical Lecturer in Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Director of the UCL Centre for Sexual Health and HIV Research. He is an Honorary Consultant in the Camden Provider Services sexual health and HIV service, based at the Mortimer Market Centre, where he he treats patients with viral hepatitis and follows a cohort of HIV-hepatitis coinfected patients. He was previously R&D Lead for Camden PCT and medical service head for the sexual health and HIV service. He has wide experience in both academic and clinical aspects of STDs. His research interests are in viral hepatitis, particularly in HIV co-infection, HPV disease, HIV cohorts and the use of information technology to improve models of care for patients in sexual health and HIV.
