This session provides an overview of the functional anatomy and physiology of the coronary circulation during the cardiac cycle. It describes the different phases and regulatory mechanisms of coronary blood flow.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the functional anatomy of coronary vessels
• Describe the relationship between metabolic activity and coronary blood flow
• Describe the phases of coronary blood flow
• Explain the difference between the right and left ventricle
• Describe the concepts of local and neuro-humeral regulation of coronary blood flow

Andrew Klein and Erik Ortmann

Andrew Klein -
Consultant Anaesthetist, Papworth Hospital
Andrew is a Consultant Anaesthetist with a special interest in cardiothoracic anaesthesia.
He is particularly interested in perioperative echocardiography, blood conservation and cell salvage. He is actively involved in research into blood transfusion, anaemia, cell salvage, coagulation factors and thrombin generation.
He acts as an editor for the journals Anaesthesia and Continuing Education in Anaesthesia, Critical Care & Pain (CEACCP), which is part of the British Journal of Anaesthesia. He has written two books: Core Topics in Cardiothoracic Critical care, and Organ Transplantation, A Clinical Guide.
He is a Royal College of Anaesthetists Tutor and has a keen interest in education and training, hence his involvement as a content author in the eLA project.

Erik Ortmann -
Clinical Fellow, Papworth Hospital
Erik is a Clinical Fellow in cardiothoracic anaesthesia.
His special interests are cardiothoracic anaesthesia, intensive care and perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography. His research interest is perioperative coagulopathy with a focus on platelet-function after cardiopulmonary bypass.
