Description

This session will introduce you to the physiological effects of altitude and the adaptations that occur with acclimatization. It also introduces the pathology and physiology of high pressure and decompression.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• State the scale and effects of low inspired oxygen partial pressure at altitude
• List the features of altitude related illness
• Describe the physiology and pathology of increased pressure during diving and hyperbaric therapy
• Describe the relevance of variation in ambient pressure to the anaesthetist

Head of School Yorkshire and Humber Anaesthetic Academy
Robert Cruickshank qualified in Newcastle in 1982 and started Anaesthesia in Durham, subsequently training in Newcastle, Sheffield and Leeds. He became a Consultant in 1991 at St James’s Leeds, with an interest in liver and kidney transplantation, paediatric anaesthesia and acutes.

He is Regional Advisor and Head of School for Yorkshire and Humber. He has extensive experience in assessment, direction of training programmes and management of trainees."
