Description

This session describes the physiology of the action potential, and how it is generated and conducted along nerves.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify how an action potential is generated in terms of ionic changes across a membrane
• Evaluate the concept of ‘membrane potential’
• Describe basic conduction in neurones

Dr Lesley Bromley is a Senior Lecturer in Anaesthesia at University College London and an Honorary Consultant at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

She has been involved with acute pain management for the last 20 years, providing direct patient care, conducting clinical research and teaching medical and nursing staff.

She was a Primary FRCA examiner for 12 years, and with her background in Pharmacology, she has written many chapters in text books on general pharmacology and on specific drug group such as analgesics.

She is joint editor of the Oxford Handbook of Acute Pain (in Press).
