This session provides an overview of the basic metabolic pathways and metabolic reactions. It also explains how the body produces and stores energy obtained from the main fuel sources — carbohydrates, proteins and fats.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe different types of metabolic reactions
• List the main sources of energy in the human body
• Recognize the differences between aerobic and anaerobic metabolism
• Summarize the main pathways involved in the metabolism of a molecule of glucose

Consultant Anaesthetist, Royal Gwent Hospital
Elizabeth has a BSc in Chemistry and an MSc in Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. Trained as a Clinical Scientist at The University of Surrey, Elizabeth then went on to study Medicine at Cardiff University.

Within the field of anaesthesia Elizabeth is interested in education and is undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, a distance based learning course run by The University of Dundee.
