Description

This session describes ways in which drugs interfere with enzyme activity. It covers the ways in which drugs can both stimulate and inhibit the action of enzymes as well as introducing enzymes as drugs.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Appreciate the importance of enzyme mediated drug action
• Classify the ways in which enzymes are involved in the of action of clinically important drugs
• Describe the importance of enzyme induction and inhibition
• Give examples of clinically relevant drug interactions that are due to alteration in enzyme activity
• Identify enzymes that are used for therapeutic purposes

Dr Nataraj is a consultant anaesthetist at the Royal Surrey County
Hospital, Guildford. He has a special interest in hepato-pancreatic-biliary surgery and vascular anaesthesia.

K.Kaliappan as an ST6 at St.Georges School of Anaesthesia.
