This session describes the main barbiturate drugs used in anaesthesia: thiopental, methohexital and phenobarbital, including their pharmacology, clinical effects and uses.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Recognize the basic pharmacology of barbiturates
• Describe the mechanism of action of barbiturates
• Explain the pharmacokinetics of barbiturates
• Describe the clinical uses of thiopental, phenobarbital and methohexital
• List the clinical effects of these drugs

Jeanie Worthington -
Anaesthetic Clinical Fellow, Royal United Hospital, Bath
Since qualifying from Sheffield in 2005, Jeanie has worked in Anaesthesia and General Practice both abroad and in the UK. She is now a clinical fellow in Anaesthesia.

Consultant Anaesthetist
Jeffrey is a consultant anaesthetist at the Royal United Hospital, Bath.
