Description

This session covers the induction agent ketamine. Ketamine is unique due to its potent analgesic properties, but its routine use is limited by adverse psychological emergence reactions.

Renewed interest in ketamine is due to the availability of S(+) ketamine and its role in acute opioid tolerance and hyperalgesia.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the physicochemical structure of ketamine
• Describe the pharmacokinetics of ketamine
• Describe the pharmacodynamic effects of ketamine on the cardiovascular, respiratory and central nervous systems
• Describe the indications and contraindications of ketamine for routine use in anaesthesia
• Explain the role of ketamine in the management of pain, opioid tolerance and hyperalgesia
• Describe the importance of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor in the action of Ketamine
• Explain the role of S(+) ketamine
